This website has been designed to tell you about the practice and the services that we offer. Please read it carefully. We trust that you will find it helpful and informative.

WELCOME TO THE PRACTICE

Welcome to our practice located on two sites. Our purpose-built premises in Purley include a pharmacy and we also occupy a converted house in Coulsdon.

Both surgeries have easy access for the disabled and offer a full and comprehensive range of medical care provided by our health care team.

All the doctors consult in both surgeries, spending half their time at each site; whilst you may consult any of the doctors, it’s a good idea to stay with the same doctor for a particular problem.
As part of our plans to improve our service to you we have produced this website, which tells you about the practice and how to manage some common problems. Please save it to your favourites.

THE HISTORY OF OUR PRACTICE

The practice has been established for more than 35 years. Originally, there were three practices at Purley, Sanderstead and Coulsdon with GPs Dr Betty Bass, Dr Mary Wilson and Dr Rick Emberton.

Dr Peter Newlands joined the practice in 1981 and became senior partner when Joyce Carlise retired in 2000. Dr Wilson retired in 1983 and was replaced by Dr John Linney and Dr Barbara Counsell. Dr Emberton retired in 1987 and was replaced by Dr Howard Hawker.

In 2001 Dr Howard Cohen and Dr Barbara Counsell were replaced by Dr Kaleem Khan and Dr Fola Shobowale. In 2004 Dr Hawker took early retirement from the practice.

The practice has grown over the years from two to five partners and we also have one full-time and four part-time salaried doctors. A huge increase in administration now requires a staff of 37 led by practice manager Mrs Nan Nobes.

Long gone are the days when the doctors did all the medical tasks themselves. We now have a highly trained and motivated team comprising a nurse manager, a nurse practitioner, six practice nurses, four health care assistants, district nurses, midwives, health visitors, dietician and counsellor. NHS Croydon employs the district nurses, the midwives, dietician and counsellor who work from within this practice.

The current partners are: Dr Peter Newlands, Dr John Linney, Dr Kaleem Khan, Dr Fola Shobowale and Dr Kazzim Mawji who practise together as a non-limited partnership.

The New NHS

All general practices in Purley and Coulsdon are under the control of NHS Croydon. This is made up of health professionals and lay representatives. The address of NHS Croydon is:

NHS Croydon
Leon House, 233 High Street
Croydon CR0 9XT

The role of nurses at the practice has extended considerably over the past couple of years and several of them are now qualified to prescribe as well. They already provide triage, minor injury, chronic disease monitoring and illness advice along with the usual treatment room duties. GPs will be encouraged to practise evidence-based medicine and the Government has set up the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) to judge controversial treatment. There are also National Service Framework (NSF) Guidelines for the routine management of chronic diseases. GPs and nurses will have to continue to keep up to date with regular personal educational development plans every year and a new scheme for their reaccreditation has been introduced. GPs will also be encouraged to develop sub-specialities.

MOBILE PHONES

Please switch them off in the surgery.
